If you own a BMW, we know you're already somewhat into cars, considering these German giants make some of the best in the world. But if you're looking to add even more speed and thrill to your vehicle, you may be wondering what you can do in terms of improving engine performance.

Thankfully, you don't have to sell your BMW and buy a faster one to satisfy your need for speed. We're going to take a look at some BMW engine modifications and upgrades that can help you get the most out of your engine.

1. BMW Engine Filter

Airflow is a vital component of how well an engine performs. The more efficiently air is mixed with fuel, the more efficiently the fuel will burn. An aftermarket air filter can improve the quality and efficiency of the airflow into the engine.

An air filter will also stop contaminants from entering the engine. Picture it like a pair of lungs - if you can breathe well and with no contaminants, you will use less energy. It's the same for a car - the better the airflow, the better the performance.

If your engine upgrade budget isn't massive, an air filter is a great start since it's not too expensive.

2. Performance Chip

Every modern car has an onboard computer called an ECU (Engine Control Unit). Oftentimes, the only difference between two engines in a range is what the computer allows the car to do. The ECU regulates things like the air-fuel ratio, idle speed, and valve control.

A performance chip overrides these controls. For most cars, fuel economy is prioritized, and so the ECU works to this end. Performance chips have a different goal, and so will prioritize performance.

3. Cold Air Intake

When air enters the engine of a car, there are often functions in the car that will cool or warm the air depending on the engine's condition.

A cold air intake overrides this and makes sure that it's cold air that enters the engine. Why? Because cold air is denser than warm air, and more air can make it into the engine. As we know, this will make the fuel burn more efficiently, thus improving performance.

4. Weight Reduction

Something you can do for an instant power boost that doesn't have to involve BMW engine modifications is to reduce the car's overall weight.

You'll be amazed at the kinds of things that can be replaced to reduce the weight of a car. You can even replace glass windows with a lighter material. Even carrying less "stuff" in your car will make a difference, not only to the performance but the economy of it altogether.

5. Wheels and Tires

Alloy wheels are lighter than steel wheels, so this will affect performance. They are also more aesthetically pleasing, so it's a win-win.

Tires actually make a big difference to performance as well. Keeping them inflated at the right pressure will ensure an even balance of power to each wheel, and performance tires have tread that reduces friction.

Improving Engine Performance Is Easy

Whether it's replacing the air filter or simply removing junk from your car, improving engine performance is achievable for anyone and everyone.
