Coilovers, Cup Kits, And You!

When it comes to lowering your car there are several options. It can definitely be overwhelming, but we are here to shed some light on the topic for you. Some setup options to lower your car are cup kits, and coilover kits. We will explain what each is, and determine the pros and cons of each.

What Is A Cup Kit?

A cup kit is pairing a lowering spring as well as a shock/strut setup. Manufacturers specifically engineer springs to work in conjunction with shocks for specific vehicle applications. They are a static setup that is pretty much a set it and forget it type deal when it comes to lowering your car with minimal adjustability, if any at all. You will get a subtle drop from the lowering springs that will give better performance over OEM, however they are not as aggressive as some other options.

What Is A Coilover Kit?

A coilover kit is the next level up from a cup kit. Coilovers consist of a a damper with a coil spring that surrounds it. A coil over shock absorber. The damper and spring are also assembled as a unit prior to installation and are replaced as a unit when either of the components fail. Many coilovers are also adjustable and have variable ride height, preload, dampers, and spring rate.

Why Choose A Cup Kit?

Are you someone who wants have some fun on the track but are more focused on street driving but want a subtle drop? A cup kit is perfect for you. You get better performance, better looks, and is more of a simple setup. It’s a fantastic OEM+ option. You won’t get as much adjustability as a coilover system, or as aggressive of a drop, but it should definitely be suitable for your needs. They are also specifically suited for your specific vehicle application. Some kit examples are:
