What Generation is my VW Golf R?
In the USA the Golf R was introduced in 2012 as a Mk6 generation. VW decided to drop the"32" designation due to the 3.2L VR6 engine beign replaced by a high output 2.0L Turbo. The Mk6 Golf R was sold in 2012 and 2013. Its sucessor was introduced in 2015 as the Mk7 Golf R. In the USA only a 4-door model was made available. The Mk7 Golf R came equipped with the new 3rd generation EA888 2.0L Turbo engine with even more tuning possibilities. In 2018 VW released a facelift version of the Golf R with some updated styling cues. The Mk7.5 Golf R saw some minor engine changes but the biggest change was the DSG Transmission option was upgraded to a 7-speed DQ381 gearbox that touted another gear and shorter ratios for better acceleration and improved fuel mileage. In 2022 the all new Mk8 Golf R was released which was a complete overhaul from the previous generation. The Mk8 model is equipped with the new EVO 4th generation EA888 engine and the same DQ381 DSG transmission. VW also still made the Golf R in the USA available with a 6 speed manual.
