The Volkswagen Jetta can be one of the most problematic cars in its price range, with over 11,000 different reported problems.

If you are a Volkswagen owner, you need to be aware of some of the more common issues you may find with your car.

But what are these problems, and what should you look out for? Read our short guide to the five most common Volkswagen problems and understand what you need to do if you encounter them in your vehicle.

1. Check Engine Light

This is a widespread problem, especially in some of the new Volkswagen cars. The problem is usually a fault with the software or a faulty sensor. However, it could indicate other problems that require maintenance.

First, you should check the gas cap as if it is loose or ill-fitting, as this will trigger the sensor. If this is not the problem, you should speak with a Volkswagen repair specialist, as the issue could be related to faulty spark plugs, fuel injectors, or broken hoses within the engine.

If the light is flashing, this indicates a much more severe problem, like overheating, and you must have the car seen by a mechanic as soon as possible. Do not drive it and pop the hood to check the temperature.

2. Oil Sludge

This is a common problem with the older 1.8l turbocharged engines. The tiny capacity this engine has for oil often leads to sludge building up inside the engine.

The engines run hot as they are turbocharged, and the limited oil capacity meant for keeping them cool means that they are prone to overheating.

However, this issue can occur in other vehicles as well, especially when you are approaching the 90,000 mile mark. You must make sure you have regular oil changes in your car to avoid taking it in for repairs.

3. Ignition Coil Failures

Another common Volkswagen problem is the ignition coil failing to start the car. In worst-case scenarios, it could even cause the engine to fail while driving.

In the past, these replacement Volkswagen parts have been difficult to come by, as the problem was quite widespread. You should try and keep some coils on standby in your car if you encounter a coil failure. Speak with a professional supplier to make sure you always have some on hand.

4. Radio Cut-outs

The Jetta has had a checkered history littered with radio problems, especially around 2010. The problems were linked to a generic part in the stereo failing, causing the radio to make a pop noise and die suddenly.

There is nothing you can do about this other than replace the radio with another. You may want to replace it with a non-Volkswagen make to try and ensure better quality in the future.

5. Airbag Light Malfunction

At around 100,000 miles, Volkswagens can experience a problem with the airbag light becoming illuminated. This can sometimes be due to a system failure, but you must still get your airbag checked by a professional, as this can be a major safety hazard.

Also, if you are stopped by the police and have a malfunctioning airbag light, you can receive a fine.
