With the recent announcement of the new GTI Clubsport, VW fans on this side of the pond have been a little bent up about the lack of special versions on our roads. Global VW spokesperson Martin Hube has stated, “There’s another interesting car we are working on at the moment. They are thinking about and working on a Clubsport version of the Golf R.”
Would You Buy a Golf R Clubsport?
BUT WILL IT SEE THE LIGHT OF DAY?
CLUBSPORT R = FOCUSED HANDLING
During the 24 hours of Nürburgring, Hube said that VW engineers have been hard at work with the creation of what could be the highest performing Volkswagen hot hatches ever. Since the Golf R is already using an amped up version of the EA888, the Clubsport R would focus more on handling dynamics with AWD.
According to Hube, “We will have an AWD, more track-oriented version, and then the standard Golf R too. On the one hand, it’s a torquey road-going sports car. On the other, because it’s a bit heavier, it’s not a track tool.”
FORMIDABLE ON ROAD COURSES
NOTHING SET IN STONE...YET
The hurdle that awaits them now is a bureaucratic one. The final say to move forward hinges on the approval from Volkswagen’s board members. Hopefully they can be convinced. At this time representatives from VW of America would not comment on the existence of a Golf R Clubsport or any other details regarding if it would even come to our shores. Currently the Golf GTI and Golf R makes up a smaller portion of Volkswagen of America’s sales sheet with 7541 GTI and 1499 R models being sold domestically in 2023. One thing is for certain however, there is room in the currently slim market of AWD performance cars where a focused Golf R Clubsport would fit right into.
